You want to edit beauty shots like a boss? Take an online course in Photoshop retouching with Julia from Omaha Image Productions. She’s one of the most talented photographer, and most skilled retoucher I’ve ever known. I stumbled across her work a few years ago on Flickr, and have been following her work ever since. Fast forward to a couple of months before this point, we have become virtually great friends. And by virtually I mean we haven’t officially met in person, yet. She’s from the boonies of America, aka Omaha, Nebraska; I’m from a cow town, aka Sacramento, California.

Julie offers high-end creative retouching online courses for portrait photographers. I’ve taken one of the courses myself, and I must say, it was one of the best things I’ve done in improving my post-processing skills. If you’re a serious photographer, or plan on becoming one, I can’t stress enough how important it is to know how to properly retouch your photos, and how useful Julia’s courses are. She offers both Portrait Retouching Crash Course, and in the longer course for pros Creative Retouching for Portrait Photographers.

Below are one of the techniques that she uses, called “Frequency Separation”. The idea is instead of using the local dodge and burn, you use 2 layers, one layer is low frequency (blur) for skin tone, and the other is high frequency for skin texture.
